As you shape your character, the game asks for some basic information regarding your play in the original KOTOR so that some basic assumptions can be made about some of the party members from the original game. The story begins five years after the events of KOTOR II. Every Force power comes with prettier effects and there will likely be 20 or so new Force powers added for the sequel, along with upwards of 60 new feats. Though you won't normally battle him in this early stage of the game (don't worry, you cross his path several more times as the story progresses), I was treated to a little developer cheat, showing off some of the new Jedi powers in a lightsaber duel with Darth Sion. You'll first run into Darth Sion on the Harbinger, a ship from the same fleet as the Endar Spire, which you may remember from the first game. And this seems to follow the path of much of KOTOR II - a darker game that seems more in line with Empire Strikes Back, which is just fine by me. He was broken, literally destroyed, and is now being held together by sheer force of will and pure hatred. Darth is a gruesome patchwork of tattered flesh. Today we were introduced to Darth Sion one of several Sith Lords that will be confronting gamers in KOTOR II. While there are no significant changes to the combat or graphics (aside from some very nice lighting effects), there's actually quite a bit of cool story and gameplay elements that could actually make KOTOR II better than the original.
Having seen the game a twice now (once at E3 and today a LucasArts' Editors' Day), I'm at ease.
I have to admit, however, that I was a little uncertain when unknown developer Obsidian Entertainment was given the task of bringing Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords to Xbox and PC. I loved the original KOTOR and the announcement of a sequel sent happy little butterflies flittering through my body.
